One of the best books I ever read with a group of 6th graders was Twenty-One Balloons by Dubois. It's absolutely fascinating. It's a fantasy story about a professor who takes a hot air balloon ride and ends up on Krakatoa before the volcano explodes. It's delightfully fresh and funny but at the same time it explores historical themes and geography.
It is an accelerated reader book and also a Newberry Prize winner. I hope you will check it out.

An OLD book called "Portrait of Jenny".... I can't remember the author, but it's a great book for that age group!
Oh, I just looked it up - the author is Robert T. Nathan.

Just take ehr to the local library, and take her to the Teen Section of reading. Most of these books are fine for grade six. If her reading level isn't as developed, find the librarian and get him or her to help her. :)
