During a couple of months of leaking and then during a repair to fix it, I put in Prestone power steering fluid into my 97 geo prism's(toyota corolla) power steering reservoir. Later I noticed that the cap says to use dexron ATF fluid (oops). Will this be a problem? Do I need to do anything? Thanks

No, it will not be a problem. They are both 10W hydraulic oil. The Dexron has additives for the transmission but it doesn't matter in the PS reservoir. The Dexron has a red dye that makes it easier to detect leaks.

It is true that both fluids are 10w oil however ATF contains detergent additives and a anti wear additive that straight power steering fluid does not contain, also power steering fluid is rated to 310micron vis. rating which is a protection or a thermal breakdown standard for hydraulic oil,ATF is rated to 550micron vis. simply put the ATF will hold up and protect your power steering pump under more stress and heat than straight power steering fluid also you must consider that the manufacturer of that power steering pump has decided to use a higher rated fluid due to upper limits of both stress and wear that your car may see and extreme conditions,I believe I would drain the power steering fluid and refill with ATF you will not see a difference right away but over time you may experience pump failure, I have worked in the oil supply and retail business for 21 years and do to this day I am telling you because most people do not understand oil or the way in witch it manufactured. Good luck.

ATF, Prestone power steering fluid, GM P/S fluid are all just about the same. The only cars that I've found that cares (whining wise) is Fords.

well it could be an expensive fix, and most likely will. Power steering is a hydraulic process, so you have high pressure lines, and after time when the lines begin to wear out it can cause a more rapid leak like the one you describe. Also but less likely is your rack and pinion has gone out, but either one your looking at paying at least a couple hundred dollars, sorry man

ATF is usaually used because it will quiet down a power steering pump. You will cause no harm using prestone.

toyota owns a part of or all of prestone.. power steering fluid in one bottle is no different than any other fluid in a different bottle.. it also is automatic transmission fluid.. same stuff..different bottle.. bout the only difference in tranny fluid is the f type.. which is required by ford.. but even that type is probably the same as is in prestone.. you should be fine..

It really doesn't matter, all power steering and brake fluids are the same; they just put that on there 'cause that's what they used on it and are trying to get you to use their dealers to get all the necessary supplies from them.

No it's Toyota's way of getting you to spend money at their dealers, don't worry about it,it will be ok.
