X is the most commonly used variable for maths equations because historically, X has been used to represent 'unknown'. X-rays are called X-rays because when William Roentgen discovered the rays, he had no idea what they were and named them X for unknown.

Hi:
It use to represent the Unknown value or quality in Algebra the Reason for this is from the 1700's when people had to graph the equations out on a X,Y graph in order to solve there math problems ( until they learn to tranpose numbers and letter to find the answer) . Today almost any letter in the Alphabet can be use to represent any number however due to the fact; we human being are creatures of habit; we use X as the variable to find our unknown answer in math

X is used for being an unknown number.
In most problems you solve for X. which is when they give you the problem then you have to find out what x is. But otherwise X is an unkown number which you solve for in problems.
