so many easy factors go into having a garden and they are often missed because of small things. it really does depend on where you live as to what to plant and how to lay it out... i've had gardens throughout my life, usually started with seeds, honestly my suggestion is for you to go to your local plant nursery and talk to them. they like to discuss this with customers, because those customers really do usually come back. they will tell you for your climate the exact date to plant and the exact perfect items for your local . they will also tell you how you can easily ready your garden area this winter so that it will be so easy to start in the summer(soil prep etc.)... another good idea is to buy their little "six pack" vegetable new starts, they will be strong, viable and dilligent against standing up to your water sprinkler, you will take weeks off you cultivation time... and it will still feel like forever before you can finally pick your goodies off your plants! hope this helped.

There is a wealth of information in seed catalogs. Varieties, requirements, days to maturity, tips on planting, etc. Google seed catalogs, and order a bunch. They are free. and you`ll have all winter to plan and study your favorites. One tip I`ll give you now. Plant your garden where the rows run east to west. You won`t have to worry about plants shading other plants.

Here is a chart that will tell you what you can plant with what.
Other than that just make sure your soil is ammended with plenty of composted material and follow planting instructions for the vegetable you choose.
