So I'm cast as Lane, the manservant. Should I play him up as chummy with algernon and like the other characters (cocky selfish) or should I play him grumpy and old?

Play him as the lines of the script indicate his personality. I think you will find that he is not chummy but rather condescending. "I thought it impolite to listen, sir." He reminds me of the butler in Arthur a very funny movie with Lisa Minelli

I actually worked on a production of that play when I was in high school. The guy who played Lane in that production played him as kind of long-suffering and slightly condecending.

He is a servant and knows his place in society, but still carries an air about himself. He has to 'appear' chummy, but may be humorously showing that he disaproves, etc.
