That's a really difficult question. I'm not sure my answer will have any value for you, but here goes.
When I think of someone I JUST like, I relate to the concepts of fun, sharing a common interest, etc., but I don't relate to them in a way as having any meaningful power over me, especially to "hurt" me.
When I have loved someone -- I'm presuming here that you're referencing romantic, sexual feelings, desires -- whenever I thought of them, there was a kind of really deep pain in my groin, abdomen if you will. It would be so strong sometime, I would become almost ill with the feeling.
And if my longing for intercourse(sexual)with them were not consummated, I would become usually very depressed for a long time, knowing that the feeling was not reciprocated.
Bottom line, if you are really in love with someone(I stress the word "in" here), believe me you'll know it.
I hope this might be edifying for you. When you're young, such understanding is usually lacking, and only comes with painful experience.
Good luck,

I dont know how deep and philosophical this is :) but I think that when you love someone, their happiness becomes more important than their own. Loving someone goes far beyond the infatuation stage to a deeper place in your heart. I also dont think that love can go away, once you love someone-truly love them- there is always a place for them in your heart. The people you only "like" come and go and are easily replaced.

I feel that there is a significant difference between like and love. Loving someone is the most wonderful feeling you will ever experience. When they are not near you, you feel there presence in spirit. It is like having the best friend you could ever want and everything else is frivolous. It is knowing what the person is thinking when they look into your eyes. Its knowing that they are there for you no matter what happens, even when they dont always know what to say. Loving someone is feeling comfortable even in silence. When a simple touch is all you need to feel whole and content.
I hope that this helps you in someway, if not I am sorry I couldnt be more help.

yeah i think so if you like someone you can like them as a friend or if you are taking about the other kind of like then there is also a difference because if you like someone then you are not thinking of a long term relationship but if you love them you want to get married and be with them forever.
well at least that is what i think i hope i was some help! =)

Liking everyone is not easy - in fact it becomes almost impossible for the human being - but it is possible to love everyone. How? How is this possible? There is a difference between liking and loving: Liking is instinctive, emotional, organic, physiological, a sensible reaction over which sometimes we have as little control as over the grumbling of our stomach. (You can't convince a child that he/she should like spinach) Loving is different. Love doesn't inhabit in the glands, but in our will. It makes its home in the intimate part of our being that is subject to moral command, and unlike liking is not a bodily reaction.

it's hard - when you like someone, you may very well also love them, just not in the way you're wanting. you like someone and they're amazing to you, but they just don't have that magic...it's the only word i can think to use. you love them and it's just a perfect kind of click in your mind. if you love them they make you feel really comfortable about who you are and feel some type of need to take care of you...
if you want more, i've got more - lol. i might be able to phrase it better...

when you like someone, it's just a crush. something that will probably pass. but if you take that like, and you get closer to that person, it may develop into love, which is a very strong feeling of wanting to be with somebody. if you spend months or years feeling that you could spend every hour of every day with somebody, you feel some degree of love.

They are but degrees. Like and love are positive emotions that feel nice or good for us. "Love" is a socialized concept of behaviours. If you love me you will do X, if you don't love me you will do Y.
What passes for "love" in the world is usually just dependence. Anyone who cannot live without you is not in love with you, but fearful that they would die without you. Dependent people are desperate and needy. But it is a process that we all can outgrow.

Huge difference! When you love someone you forget your ego and you are dedicated to him. When you like someone it's more egoistic you want yo be accepted. When you love someone you care about him neither you can have him or not.
