Why do you think commercial producers are leaning more and more on adaptations than they are developing new and original stories?

I agree that it is financally based. If the book is a best seller then chances are good that people will want to see the movie. I have to say though, in my opinion, I have NEVER seen a movie as good as the book. There are some amazing movies out there that I absolutly loooove but I think the book is even better. The movies usually either leave out a lot due to time constraints or take "artistic license" and redo the facts.

To be honest, most bestsellers completely suck, but the movies made of them are worse. I think literature and film are two entirely different mediums, and you can't create a decent piece of art in one if you're trying to stay true to the other. Unfortunately, directors and publishers alike seem to be running out of fresh material

Because it's a sure thing. If a book sells 20 million copies than that means they'll go watch the movie too.

It's a no-risk thing.
