It's slang. They're too lazy to say American so they say Yank since it is 2 syllables shorter. Just like they call themselves Aussie instead of Australians since it is faster to say.

Probably because they are a part of English rule & the English started calling Americans YANKS during the 1920's. It's an ignorant term that turns most Americans off to the people who choose to use it. It implies that white Americans all think the same & that's just not the case in the USA any longer. A few backwards locations still have YANKS that are involved with the White Supremeacy Groups of the Southern States, where the Civil War was fought!

I'm not even American and I hate that expression.
But I just looked it up in the dictionary and it just had `yankee` beside it...
:S
But as for `Yankee` it came up with this:
1. A native or inhabitant of New England.
2. A native or inhabitant of a northern U.S. state, especially a Union soldier during the Civil War.
3. A native or inhabitant of the United States.
All of these words like Yank/Yankee come from the war.
Also, Australians and New Zealanders basically use the same slang or whatever you want to call it, and I hear people say Yanks, and it isn't in an offensive or racist manner.

Yes, it means Yankee. An abbreviation. Same as David- Dave, Michael-Mike. Yankee- Yank. Not only Aussies, but Brits, too, say that.
There is also the word "Plank" in the UK. From rhymed slang Yank-Plank. Example- He is a Plank-"plain Yank."
Canadians do not use that word for some reason, though.

The entire UK calls us Yanks, which is short for Yankee. The Yankee was a type of clipper made in the new england states, and was used as a trader to england. They crew was called yankee traders, which was shortened to Yankee and then Yank.
Brits are often called Limeys or POMs; Limey from eating lime on sea trips to prevent scurvy and POM for Prisoner Of her Majesty.
New Zealanders are called Kiwi, and Australians Auz or Aussie.

The Aussie's and the Brit's call we American's Yank's. Yan-kee was a indian word used by the tribes of the Northeast to describe the white folks. As to why the Aussie's and the Brit's call us this is totally beyond me.
