I don't know, but people have gone WAY OVERBOARD with it. Yucky leathery orange wrinkly skin..... A real sunkissed glow is nice though... make you look healthier and you can get it with sunscreen in a healthy way!

Whichever one implies that you have nothing better to do with your time but work on your skin color is the popular one.

That went back to the middle ages when working people were out all day turning brown in the sun while rich people stayed in the castle and were pale as can be.

Now when almost everyone works inside and tan skin suggests you just came back from a tropical vacation then tan skin got to be called more desirable.

I would guess the modern version started around the 1950's when jet travel for vacations became a plaything for the rich while the rest of the people were inside earning a living.

After WW2, but still in the 40s. It really didn't see it's heyday until the 50s and 60s. Before ww2, the idea was to stay out of the sun in order to have white skin that didn't wrinkle until much later on in life. Very true, BTW.

I noticed it about 2 years ago. It looks good on some people but I still love the natural pale skin. You have to know if it looks good on you or not..........which some people don't.
