I think it is great that you decided to name your daughter after your grandmother. Mary is adorable especially since it has family ties. However, Mary IS a bit plain. Since Mary goes great with almost any name, try using a double name (like Mary-Kate Olsen's name). My sister grew up with a very common name Emily and decided to make her name a double name with her middle name to give herself originality, and went by Emily-Page her whole childhood. It is a great way to give normal names originality.
Consider these:
You could give her second name a common name also:
Mary-Catherine
Mary-Paige
Mary-Anne
Mary-Danielle
Mary-Leigh
Mary-Beth
Mary-Nicole
Mary-Olivia
Mary-Victoria
Mary-Claire
Mary-Lynn
Mary-Rose
Mary-Elizabeth
Mary-Grace
Mary-Candice
Or you could make her second name more out-there since Mary is so traditional (make sure you don't put a traditional name next to a really trendy name):
I once knew a Mary-Heith
Mary-Jade
Mary-Corrine
Mary-Ella / Mary-Elle
etc.
Or, you could change the Y in Mary to an I and add the name in the end without a hyphen (this only looks good with some choices):
Marianne looks good
Mariclaire doesn't
Rosemary looks great, also.
My favorites are Mary-Catherine, Rosemary, Mary-Leigh, Mary-Ella, and Mary-Anne.
I hope this helps!
Good luck and God bless

RE:
Variations of the name Mary for a baby name?
My grandmother Mary died a few years ago and I was very close to her. Even though she couldn't see her granddaughter, I want to honor her by naming my firstborn after her.
Mary admittedly is a bit plain, and I have little imagination, so I wondered if anyone had some inventive variations of...

I like Mary in and of itself -- it's a nice contrast to the "kreatyv" names most kids these days get stuck with. But for other versions:
Marie
Maria
Anne Marie
Mary Beth
Margaret Mary
Mary Elizabeth
Mary Rose

Mariana is a pretty variation of the name. But there is nothing wrong with the name Mary, perhaps calling the child by her first and middle name..such as Mary Margaret?

My favorites are ...
Mairenn (MAWR-en, to rhyme with Lauren), which means "little Mary"
Maura
Moira
Mairwen (MIER-wen - long "i" sound)
Mariam
Miriam
Marigold - the name of the flower literally comes from the name Mary and word "gold" ;)
Molly - though I prefer this as a nickname for any of the above
I also like simply Mary -- not at all plain ... it's sweet! ;) -- and Rosemary, which you mentioned, nicknamed Romy.
You could also do a double name like ...
Mary Lilah
Mary Charlotte
Mary Gwen
Mary Cecilia
Mary Pearl
Mary Harper
Mary Tess
Mary Genevieve
Or of course there's always the usual Mary Kate, Mary Claire, Mary Ann(e), Mary Jane, etc., but since you wanted something a bit more imaginative, I stuck with the less expected combos. ;)
Hope that helps!
Edited to add: to the above poster who wishes her name had a nickname option ... Mia is the traditional one for Maria. ;)

I love the name Maura. I don't know what language it's from but I know it's a variation of Mary.
I also like Rosemary a lot.
You could also use Margaret or Maggie. I love the name Maggie.
I also like Martha a lot. I don't know if it's technically a variation of Mary but it certainly has a similar sound to it.

I actually like just plain Mary, and it would be unique nowadays, since it's not a popular name. I think it's pretty. Rosemary is pretty, other names are Marybeth Mary Ann, Mary Jane, Mary Jo. Marilyn, Marisa, Maren, Marian. I once knew a girl named Marilee.
