It's possible. Banks have different regulations, but many will lend money to legal aliens. You need to have a steady income from a US source, and they'll check your American credit. If you're from Canada they may use your Canadian credit report -- but that takes a really long time and some amount of trouble to get, so be patient -- but generally speaking the bank won't get foreign credit reports. You probably need a SSN, but some banks will accept TIN instead. Try the bank that already knows you. They're probably your best chance.

You can also go straight through Bank of America. They have a great program for nonresidents.
