Bikes are only legal to ride on public roads if they came from the manufacturer with that intent. In other words if you own a duo-sport or enduro type dirt bike that came from the manufacturer with headlight, tail and stop light, license plate holder and turn signals it is intended for street use on public roads. If it came with everything for riding on public roads except turn signals it may still be legal for street use as turn signals didn't become mandatory for all street bikes until sometime in the seventies. And the reality is most cops don't know or bother with keeping up on which bikes should have turn signals and which don't legally have to. I don't like the looks of stock turn signals and take them off. I've never been cited for not having turn signals when rousted. They tend to stick to the old standbys, handlebars too high and pipes too loud.

It depends on your local laws. In many locations, if a motorcycle is designated from the factory as "Off Road Use Only", it can not be made street legal no matter what you do. In many locations, if it has a 2 stroke motor, it can not be made street legal because of emissions requirements. In areas where they can be made street legal, you will need to add a headlight, tail light, brake light, turn signals, street tires, speedometer, mirrors, and a horn. You may also need to change your muffler. You may also want to change your sprockets so your bike can better handle sustained highway speeds. Even if your bike can achieve highway speed, how long will it be able to maintain it. You really need to contact your local DMV before making these modifications so you don't waste a lot of money on a bike that will not be street legal. You may also have a problem because a dirt bike electrical system may not have the capacity to handle these additional electrical requirements. If you need a street / trail bike, you would be better off selling your dirt bike and put the money from the sale towards a motorcycle that is already street legal.

If it had signals, then no. If it was made prior to 1974 (I could be a year or 2 off), yes, if it was street legal then. If it was not designed for street use, it will NEVER be street legal, no matter what you do. I have a 1972 Honda CT-90 and it is street legal, with no signals, because it never had them, and was street legal in 1972, hope this helps. Year, make and model is necessicary for a defininitive answer, and BTW, there are lots of non street legal bikes (mostly from China) that have signals. It has to have a 17-digit VIN to be street legal as well (1984 and up, I believe)and if it doesn't, it will never be street legal.

In some states it is legal to drive a dirt bike, atv,or off-road vehicles on "country roads". My suggestion is that you might go to your county court house or your state DMV and see if they have rules on such things...most rules apply though when operating such vehicles head light for night and a break light for day/night in some places turn signals are optional, also keep in mind that some states require that riders be of certain age and that all riders in certain states require a helmet...for example Missouri requires helmets and Kansas does not. It seems like alot to if ya think about it to look into but better safe then sorry...oh and yes I think hand signals are still used in all states as for the reason that some bikers still ride some "old school" bikes that have no turn signals....good luck

It is a legal requirement in all 50 states for any motorcycle made after 1973 to have turn signals. Hand signals are not considered a substitute for motorcycles as it takes doth hands to control them properly. Most manufatcurers sell kits that let you put them on to make a dirt bike street legal.

Depends on the year. If it has a brake/tail light and a headlight. Is a 2 stroke made before 95, and a 4 stroke any year. You will need to get a street title for it. The stat will inspect it ect. I am going through the proccess of legalizing my 92 YZ250. It is all paperwork once you make it conform to your states laws. all i need is headlight, tail/brake, and a kickstand(most dirtbikes dont come with them).

Depends on where you are, and the local laws.
In NH, no turn signals is legal for 1973 and older.
It would have to meet all the other requirements, though.

Edit: Never mind, I just saw your other question.

as far as i know hand signals are still legal to use if a vehicle was not equipped with turn signals, however, best to call your state police and verify this information.
good luck
