Fair use of a copyrighted material is very subjective and hard to determine. There are four major aspects to consider when testing for fair use: purpose, nature of the copied work, amount and substantiality, and effect on the original works value.

While the abridged series does gain a large amount of leeway because it is a parody, it still has to be judged by the four aforementioned considerations. The biggest problem with the abridged series is amount and substantiality. The abridged series use a huge portion of the original works (all the footage comes straight from the series they are parodying, they use the same plot- albeit they change many things, and they often use important phrases of dialog without changing them in the slightest). If they instead drew the artwork themselves when making the parodies, there would be no doubt that they were covered by fair use.

However, this being said, I still think the abridged series falls under fair use- mainly because it is a parody, it is done for non profit, and the other 3 factors are so low. But different courts could decide differently.
