By their looks or actions. You could make fists and steam going out of ears for an angry person. Tears and glum looks for sad people. Huge smiles for jolly people. Etc...Hope I helped! :P

When I think of misery in an abstract form, I think of sporadic and erratic lines. The lines of the picture could be angled and even sparse. I would also see mostly cool muted colors with a hint of red to balance it out. The cool muted colors would reflect sadness and the red would reflect anger.
I would say that your image would have to be extremely asymmetrical, almost unbalanced.

Darkness, a person falling down a long way (like from a dark, snowy or icy mountain), a person seemingly being pulled down, dark circles under the eyes, a furrowed brow, down-turned mouth, a pained expression.
