Lets start with the last thing first. You have to take your back foot out of the binding because while you sit on the lift and ride up your board must point forward. If you didn't take one foot out the board would be sideways and it would smack everone elses skis or boards on the way up. Not to mention that it is actually more difficult to get off the lift with both feet strapped in since your board will be horizontal. (In fact all resorts require you to have one foot out for this very reason and most can and will kick you out if you strap in on the way up.)

Stopping with one foot out comming off the lift can be tricky at first but with practice and good balance you'll get the hang of it. Rest your foot on the stomp pad and against the side of the binding to help with traction. Then apply extra pressure to that foot to keep it in place. While doing this start to rotate your hips while beginning to turn your front foot with your toes pointing down the mt and away from the lift. Start to swing your back leg forward untill your legs are parallel. And while doing all of this, try to keep the pressure on the heelside edge of your board, (do this by lifting the front of your foot and slightly leaning back.) AND, KEEP YOUR KNEES BENT!

Regular heelside turns are done in the same way as described above. The only difference is both feet are strapped in.

Toeside turning is done by shifting the direction of the board uphill while digging your toes down instead of your heels.

But the best advice I can give you is take a lesson. Even one will help dramatically.

Hope this helps

To stop a snowboard, force the board at an 90 degree angle to the hill, just like you do with skies. As for ride up a chair lift, remove one foot from the strap and just let it dangle.

To stop in either direction you put your board at a sharp angle the slope, basically dig in, and you will stop. As far as getting on and off the lift, you have to take one foot to slide along since you don't have poles like skiers do. You're stuck if it is flat and both feet are in your bindings. So you take one foot out and push yourself along using your loose foot to push yourself along like on a skateboard. It takes a lot of practice to get to where you don't fall down every time.

you go on an edge to stop, you take one foot off because it's some safety precaution thing...it safer than putting both feet on the board when on a lift
