I'm very well versed on BMW and getting more knowledge on HD.
The cheap BMWs are the F650 and F800. BMW is known for shaft drive, but the F bikes are belt drive like a Hardley, AND they don't even have BMW engines, they are a Rotax branded engine. So big turn-off for me. HOWEVER BMW does have some very good baggage options which make them very versatile, and I haven't heard anything particularly negative about the Rotax (the 650 is a single 650cc and the 800 is a 800cc vert. twin). The BMWs have more of a standard seating position and in general I'd say they handle better than a Harley cruiser (the HD Buell is a different category, I don't know much about Buell, it seems like they would handle better than a Harley cruiser, but on par with a BMW, I would think). To get in to a "true" BMW with a BMW 2 cylinder opposed twin or 4 cylinder and shaft drive, you are talking Harley-category pricing, mid to upper teens and on up.
For Harley, there is the Buell Blast for entry level, which I understand DOES have a HD-made engine (Kansas City-made I believe) and has a belt drive like the rest of the HD models. Going up to the cruisers, the Sportster 883 is actually less than the entry-level BMW F650, BUT the F650, to me, is a more adaptable bike and more useable. People say the 883 aren't typically held on to for long because of "lack of power", which I don't understand, HEY it's 883 cc, NOT big enough?? From there you go up to the middle of the road Dyna class or even bigger, to the touring class. A new sportier cruiser is the V Rod, which I've heard scoot along pretty good. So kinda depnds on if you want an all-around useful bike, or something cooler but not as practical on long trips, unless you want to shell out big bucks modifying it.

Whatever makes ya happy, man. I was recently in the market for a new bike, i went with an 07 zuki C50. I wanted a Harley, being growin up an hour from milwaukee where they originated, but it wasn't in the cards financially. All bikes now a days are good though, just ride whatever gives ya that thrill. It's a good itch to have, and it'll never go away.

No HOG or BOG, airheads rules!
No loud pipes to save my live!
Just keep your head cool and ride a real motorcycle!
Not the plastic things where Barbie sits on, but pure Iron for your Butt!
An Airhead gives you so much pleasure and joy. There are still many to enjoy with those machines!
