Uvb lighting is very important its basically a sun-substitute. any nutirents the bearded dragon would naturally get from the sun rays it can get from uvb lights. if they dont get the proper light needed they don't grow and will die. Its a common mistake people make with turtles, they dont provide a uvb light and therefore their turtle ands up smaller and in an early grave. If you need more info pet shops are more han happy to tell you more about the lights and that sort of stuff, all i can say tho is got to a few pet shops because they all say different things, some you might think are talkin crap and others might be life savers. But yeah they deffinately need Uvb bulbs. You have to be warry though becasue they can last up to 5 years but by about the first year all the uvb light rays are used up so you'll have to replace it nearly every year. Make sure you get UVB bulbs and not UVA or ultraviloet becasue they dont produce the same waves of light as UVB lights do they are just out there to rip you off.

well i'm not an expert, but everyone is right about that bone disease. I have two bearded dragons. The Uvb lighting will help them grow and have flexability to move around. Other than the vitiman D. the Uvb lighting will help them digest. I guess it is a substitute to the suns rays. If you were to leave your buddie in the sun you would have let him bake for up to 6 hours to get the proper amount of uvb rays. So we are all better off having a bulb. Try the new 10.0 Uvb bulbs. better than the 8.0 uvb. good luck. For the dragons of cousre i'm not sure about the other reptiles.

The UVB stimulates the skin to synthesize vitamin D. Beardies synthesize vitamin D3 when exposed to UVB, and D3 is necessary for calcium metabolization. Without UVB, beardies and other reptiles that require it will develop metabolic bone disease, which can be fatal if not treated in time. Find out more about MBD here:

UVB gives them the necessary stuff to produce and use Vitamin D i think it is. If they do not get proper UVB they will get MDB which is a Bone disease that causes them Death or serious paralysis. If your Dragon does not get real Sunlight an effective UVB bulb is not an option it is NECESSARY. Repti Sun makes a good one.

hey Mike, We have beardie too, they need the UV light since they are not in the desert getting real sunlight. Ours has the uv bulb and 2 heat lamps 75 w red Heat glo and 100 w Sun glo these are all on a timer. The only one that stays on 24 hrs is the red one. The others go out at 9 pm and turn back on at 7 am. Not only do they need the uv light for their bones they also need calcium supplement, we dust our crickets with calcium dust. Good luck and have fun

It particularly must be a tumbler sort enclosure with the flexibility to have a easy overhead so that is going to heat up. no rely if it particularly is an old table I doubt it ought to have the flexibility to obtain easy from the hood all throughout the time of it and carry the warmth so as that the dragon is saved on the properly suited temperature. (eighty 5-ninety 5 degree F. for the time of the day, approximately seventy 5-eighty at night) they at the instant are not enormous climbers yet do prefer to have the flexibility to arise severe particularly close to (no longer touching!) their basking easy. they do no longer run plenty yet do want room to go around some. The 30 gallon tank ought to serve him for a 300 and sixty 5 days or extra. stable success with ending the deployment. My fiance in basic terms have been given back from Iraq and that i had dragon staring at responsibilities for a 300 and sixty 5 days.

UVB is to prevent metabolic bone decease, also UVA is to increase appetite all in one is to stimulate the natural calciums and vitamin D3 process in their bodies like the sun does w/out it they would not be able to make calcium. So what happens Is calcium deficiency which is not as bad as metabolic bone decease.
