I know that several banks has been doing check images since check 21 took effect. My mother rather have the original checks send back to her instead of getting the check images in her monthly statements.

Check 21 does not prohibit (nor require) a bank from returning canceled checks. The contents of an account statement will continue to be governed by the account agreement between the bank and its customer.

I think a small, local bank would be most likely to offer the service of returned checks so contact some local banks in your area.

(Check 21 does permit the bank to return the original check or a substitute check.)

Your bank may offer you the option of getting canceled checks returned, but will probably charge $3 a month or so. But you'll find that many times the places you send checks to just convert the check to an electronic form, and have it processed electronically. The original check doesn't exist any more, so it can't be returned. I would say about half the checks I write are processed that way.

You can look at your mother's bank statement and see how many checks are imaged, and how many are converted to electronic form (there won't be any check image, but there will be a debit shown on the statement). If the checks she wants are imaged, she should be able to pay the monthly fee to have them returned to her.

Some banks offer that service for an additional fee. She should ask her bank. If YOU are trying to find out without her knowing what you are doing, just call the bank yourself and tell them you are interested in opening a checking account. Ask if they offer original check return service and what fees are associated, if so.

Banks do have access to the originals but they charge you for it now.

I don't think the banks have the originals to give her. If they did, I'm sure she'd have to pay for that service.

She'll have to call the bank and ask them.
