What makes someone like a certain team?

Four basic reasons, sometimes interconnected:
1. Location. If you live near a particular team, you will root for it. You root for your high school team, your college team, the nearest pro team. Such allegances usually are made as a child, and you usually don't outgrow them.
2. Parents. If your parents have an interest in a team, the child may follow along. Of course, sometimes just to be different the kid will root in another direction (Yankees-Red Sox).
3. Favorite player. How many people in America admired Cal Ripken, and thus became Oriole fans during his career? Many.
4. Bandwagon. If you see a team doing well in a sport that you have no particular allegance to, then you might follow them. For me, I picked up on UCLA when I was a child when Kareem arrived, and I've watched them ever since.

Just something you can identify yourself with is usually the main reason. I live in Idaho but like the patriots because they are a good team and I like the players and coach. So you could say I joined because of the bandwagon but now no matter what I Will always root for the patriots and that's the reason why there is still so many cowboy fans and such.

I'm a Habs fan because I grew up watching their farm team in Halifax. I'm a Pats fan because Pats games were just about the only NFL games we got in Halifax back in the days before 100 channels. I'm a Blue Bombers fan because I used to live in Winnipeg. I'm a Suns fan because I'm Canadian and so is Nash-it's not much fun being a Raptors fan! When it comes to NCAAB I'm a Blue Devils fan just because a certain person I like to annoy is anti-Duke.
