I've already bought some of my Christmas gifts; it makes the time less frantic.
As to what to wear, I plan that last minute if it's normal dress. If you're having a party where everyone is dressing in costume, for instance in Victorian apparel, I'd start at least a month ahead and maybe a bit more (like right after Halloween).
I'd also get my party ideas down very early, and invite people by the middle of November. (If you don't, people may have other plans by the time you get around to it.)
If you have a large party, a good idea is for everyone to bring one wrapped, anonymous gift that ranges in price from about $25 to $30. Then have everyone who brought a gift pick a number from a hat (which tells them in what order they are to select a gift from the wrapped presents). It's fun and we often have it where the first person who selects a gift (and so on) unwraps the gift before everyone and each succeeding person can choose a wrapped gift or steal one that's already been chosen. The first on the list gets a chance to "steal" from any of the other gifts after they've all been opened. This is fun so long as people are respectful and never take a gift that the person who opened it really loves!

I'm crazy but I start buying gifts in October so I can spread out the money over a couple of months and I don't feel a big financial hit in December.
For parties I pick a date in early November since people's calendar's fill up fast in December.

I start shopping for presents late November and very early December, party ideas I would probably start that early and let people know.

I like to get a lot of my shopping done in October and the beginning of November.
But I like to get a few extras a week before.
I like to go out on the friday after thanksgiving and go shopping.
The easiest gift is a gift card.
A fun idea for parties is a "white elephant" gift party. Have door prizes and different games to play.
