A mid-life crisis is that time, as you are approaching your forties, it suddenly dawns on you, that while you were busy doing something else, half your life has gone.
All the plans, dreams and aspirations you had as a young person were modified or abandoned completely in the quest to earn a living and get on in with doing the things society expects of you.
Your children grow up, and you realise that, pretty soon they will leave home and have no further use for you. You are redundant to them, and too old to retrain or have new opportunities offered to you.
You look in the mirror and see someone you don't recognise, with lines appearing and grey hairs peeping through. You realise now how good looking you once were, and how little you appreciated that at the time. Bits of you bag and sag and some have a mind of their own!
But you do eventually get through it. Unless you sit on your backside for 20 years, there is always something you accomplish during your life. You go around telling harassed young mothers to enjoy their children when they are little because they grow up so fast.
You appreciate the subtle changes that turn your children into friends that you are always pleased to see (when they can be bothered to visit). You learn to accept yourself as you are and be happy with your new look.
You gain the courage to do something for yourself and go to college or take up evening classes or join that drama group, because you finally understand that if you don't throw yourself into your life, you'll never really live.

It refers to menopausal women, and in the past decade, to men also. It's supposed to occur during your 40's, and has been linked to a change in hormonal balance brought on by aging. That's the clinical reasons, anyway.
I find that it attacks men and women once they reach the age where their children are grown, no longer need the constant looking after; life is in its middle state when it should become easier, or at least less stressful; planning for retirement suddenly becomes more important; physical changes (things head south) seem like they just creep up on you overnight; and a host of other changes that we suddenly notice for the first time that signal our own mortality in a way they never did before.
Yes, it happens to everyone, but not everyone responds the same. Some make positive changes...they find new meaning to life. Others take it negatively and spend a lot of time dwelling on what was, and trying to recapture a youth that they idolize because its past.

A crisis in mid-life!
Who am I? What am I DOING? Why am I here? What is the point? What is my role? Am I making the most of opportunity's and the chances I have been given? Why is life unfair? Why can't I make people do what I want them to do? God is this it? That sort of thing.....

Mid-Life Crisis is a medical condition all men get who are 50 years old. The symtoms are slightly enlarged stomach, slightly drooping muscles, aging wife with these same conditions, and the worst symtom of all, your 21 year old mistress announcing that you are too old for her. The remedy is acquiring lots of money, buying a new red corvette, applying hair coloring or other hair restoration, and finding a new 20 year old mistress.

Midlife crisis is when you realize you are halfway through your life.
So you have to hurry up and do all the stuff you haven't done yet.
It happens around age 40, that's why 40 is called over the hill.
People in their 40s are seeking new jobs, changing their styles, trying new things, traveling, etc.
Their kids are usually grown and they have less responsibility for the family.

Its the realization that you are getting older and that much closer to your ultimate death. Its also the realization that you have not done those things that you have wanted to do and that time is moving on and you may not be able to do them.
Not all people go through it, as they have no problem getting older and live each day as it comes. It just depends on the person and their level of happiness with their life.

mid-life crisis is the realization that you are no longer a kid and that you've become a full adult.
The drama that happens to some is a result of this realization.
