For those who have been in Politics for any length of time, THERE IS!
It is called: Their Record.
If appropriately examined, the history of their votes and actions speak loudly. It is a good predictor of their FUTURE actions.
Example: Bill Clinton was well known for lying and being a womanizer before he was elected.
He swore he had changed. The rest is history repeating itself.
American voters can be fooled EVERY time, so a lie detector is of little use.

Why would you want the head of a superpower to have to tell the truth always?
Try playing poker without bluffing.
What about when a president lies so that his special ops team behind enemy lines is not exposed and killed?
How about Kennedy during the Missile crisis? Was he REALLY going to nuke Havana and Moscow? If he was forced to tell the truth, how would that play out?
Sorry kid, in the adult world people lie all the time.
When the smoke clears any president has to be responsible for their actions, but since everyone short of fools and saints lies, a poor liar is a disaster waiting to happen.
Why do you think they called Clinton "Slick Willy"? Oh right, bad example....

Lie detectors don't work, contrary to what the entertainment industry shows. If you can tell a bold faced lie you can pass a detector test.

Because they 1) wouldn't pass and 2) they would have to implement it. Also a lie detector is a fairly innacurate test.

Because everyone in the Bush Administration would fail. And most people in Congress would fail.
If you hooked Dick Cheney to a Polygraph, it would explode, because it would be overloaded with evil.
