Unless you're white in America, they don't really consider us americans. I was born and raised here with Indian parents, but just because I have brown skin, people are surprised when I don't speak with an accent.

Well I am African and that is the way it will always be. I stand for everything that is African and I'm Africa personified. I that can't help it though that I'm labeled black where I live - but only when it fits the situation. I know the game too well, and that's the major problem with me. Sometimes people would like me to specify when there is a need of seeing Africans as separate people with many different cultures and languages. In other situations all Africans, regardless of e.g. our past or how organised our ancient kingdoms were, suddenly become primitive, savages, starving people, low iq:ed, etc. etc. etc. etc. Again.. that's the name of the game.

Did you mean, the difference of skin ? It's not easy to explain such question you know... Maybe it's the climate, the food , the way of life or it's just how each one of us are designed to be by the the Almighty. But there are ways to lighten the skin texture if one has very dark complexion, and for fair skin their are also ways to darken their skin a little. There is nothing wrong with the difference of colors of every race, it's how we reacted to situations or to each other as human beings that counts.
With regards to how one is called being black-americans, african-americans and not just plain americans, well , that is how they are addressed by people to determine which race they belonged . Are they half american and africans, etc.You can call them as plain americans, why not? They are human beings just like everybody else. It's not important how they are called by how their skin color differes from everybody else....
You're observant of how things are going on around you, it is a good sign........Nowadays, there's the marriage of different races, chinese and americans, cubans and africans , australians and people living in hawaii. Hopefully time would come that all races will unite and become one.....just my own point of view .

Good question!
But consider this...
If you're born in Spain and are completely Spanish descent (as far back as the country's culture goes, that is, actually established as Spain), then you're considered Spanish. But if you're of French descent living in Spain, you're a French Spainard (spelling?)
Same if you grow up in Brazil, then move to England, you're Brazillian English.

Americans think we're the only "melting pot" of the world. And while it's true, we do have many different ethnicities, people tend to think that everyone living in Spain or Italy is Spanish or Italian, respectively.

PS- notice I used places of different skin colors, because the naming system has nothing to do with "dark skinned people-ie black, brown) Even your example included English and French.

It's another way to differentiate for the purpose of discrimination as far as I'm concerned. Hitler did the same thing in Germany with the Jews. They weren't considered Germans, they were German-Jews. I consider myself to be black American, not African American. I've never been to Africa and while I cherish my African heritage, I know that I am American, just as any African that I meet knows that as well.

i've lived in some of these other countries and they still have classifications for them. for example in england most black people know where their herritage hails from. at least from one of two larger regions. they tend to calssify black people as either african or carribean even if somebody's family has been there for like three generations. there are labels everywhere but it's about identifying skin color. the only difference is the blacks is england seem to be generally very proud of their identification (its a pity most blacks in america don't know what region their family hails from for obvious historical reasons)
