the formula came up weird but the two CH3 on the second line are linked to the first CH and the single C

The Parent chain is C6 ..Hexene.
The two methyl groups make it an Iso C8..Iso-Octene.

Here's the definition of a parent chain:
the longest continuous chain of connected carbon atoms in a hydrocarbon.

This should help you figure it out. I'm all for people figuring things out for themselves once they have useful information at hand.
