farm animals includes the two women(cows) and adult males(bulls). In a farm animals herd there are various cows and intensely few bulls. One bull for each thirty cows. Cows have the udder and produces milk. Bulls have no udder yet have a protracted pendulous piece of epidermis interior the ventral area of abdomen (prepuce) with penis interior.

In all honesty, they probably saw the calfs suckling the mama cow, so they got the hint. But good question.

noticed that the cow's bag dropped and got swollen...and then later when the calf came, he observed that the calf was frothing at the mouth when he was tugging on it...which in turn made him wonder if the calf would tug on other things in just that manner...

Watching the calf drinking. They also knew that women of thier tribe were feeding babies. You most likely sucked one yourself.
