the " check engine soon " lighted up today...what might have triggered the warning to light up ?

The check engine light tells you there is a problem with your emission system. Go to auto zone or other parts store and they will read your codes, as they are called, free. Do not do anything if you do not understand the codes. Do not change any sensors until you post the codes here, or if you know someone who understands them. Some stores or auto repair shops will sell you a bunch of stuff and still not solve your problem. Remember, these codes tell you there is a problem, not that you need a bunch of new parts.

first did you get gas today? Loose fuel cap is the first thing to check. How is it running? If it is running poorly then you have another clue as to what the problem could be. The next thing that it could be is an oxygen sensor or one of many other things, get a free computer code scan at Autozone or Advance autoparts. Then you have an area to diagnose but not usually just a specific part to replace.

go have the computer scanned and it will tell the problem.
