Whatever you do don't go to a walmart or something like that. When it comes to baby furniture, this is where it's ok to spend more and get more. Buying consigned things can be ok if on a tight buget but keep in mind that alot of this stuff may have been abused or even recalled and you might not know it so if you plan to go that route do your homework!
Alot of furniture stores out there today will have a baby section with the top of the "run of the mill cribs" for your choosing. If you are looking for something special however, you may want to try looking online. When we bought our crib YEARS ago, we went to a place called USA Baby. They have stores all over the US and also specialize in the "run of the mill" cribs. Their prices ranged from a couple of hundred for a simple crib to thousands for a designer round crib. We chose the BabyDreams brand because it was sturdy, had beautiful lines, and it has a fold down gate instead of a drop down side which is safer for your baby. It also converts to a toddler bed and later to a full size bed. Over time, that is a good way to recoupe your money. We also got a matching dresser with a hutch that doubles as a changing table station. All total, for the crib, mattress, and dresser, and hutch I think it cost around $4000...not bad considering we've already put 4 babies through it and are getting ready for number 5! What we did was register for the crib/dresser/etc we wanted and people could choose to either buy it off our registery or give us gift certificates to put towards the purchase of the crib. By the end it didn't cost us anything.

consignment stores...by your second kid, you realize how little you use most of what you get...and kids out grow things SO fast there is very little reason to buy all these expensive things brand new. unless, of course, you want to...in that case babys r us is an awesome one stop shop kinda deal, and has LOTS of pretty cribs...and a lot of the smaller chains offer more unique choices, like USA baby. expensive, but pretttty stuff!!

we bought our crib at babies r us, we got it on clearance and I love it. It was about $175. My dresser was from k-mart of all places, less than $80, and its great. My changing table was from Ikea, it was $40, but they don;t make it anymore.
