I'd bring a light, water-resistent jacket; Polar Tec or a similar fabric works well in our climate. Beyond that, you might want a sweatshirt since you're not used to the climate, but prepare for warm afternoon weather, too.
Three days is enough to start, at least for the downtown area, but there are a tremendous number of things to see in Seattle and in Washington as a whole.
Enjoy your visit!

This is the damp time of year. The wind carries the chill right through clothing. For those who are not used to it, they can get chilled very easily.
Ponchos work better than umbrellas, because we get spontaneous winds that drives the rain sideways. They also stop the wind from carrying the chill right through most types of clothing.
Gloves are a good idea. Fingers get chilled quick.
No open-toed shoes. You might even want to wear water-tight boots if you're going to do some walking.
Best not to wear a skirt. For some reason, the Seattle weather loves to blast winds up skirts and give everyone a good sideshow.
We had some mild weather recently, but last October got bitter cold and it seems that it's gearing up for similar bitterness.
I don't know what you're here to see, so there's no way of knowing if three days would be enough. In my opinion, though, it's best to steer clear of the Seattle tourist traps, because everything is ridiculously overcrowded and overpriced, and go visit the neighboring cities.

Seattle weather can change in a matter of minutes so dressing in layers is always a good idea. I suggest a pair of long pants, a casual shirt (t shirt or button up whatever you prefer), and a light weight sweater or sweatshirt. A light waterproof jacket is also a good idea if you plan on spending much time outdoors. Good walking shoes are a must, espically if you'll be walking downtown.
Like another poster mentioned, most Seattlites don't use umbrellas. I've lived here my whole life and while I own 3 or 4 umbrellas I *never* use them. I just wear a Helly Hansen jacket.

In case it rains, bring a hat or a hoodie, which ever fits your style better, but forget an umbrella - only tourists bring those.
Seattle is somewhat metropolitan with classic black, grays, neutrals. Its also a casual city, so bring what suits you best. You probably wont need more that a long sleeve and overlayer (thermal-ish & sweater/cardigan/hoodie) Probably wont need an actual coat unless you are really sensitive to the weather.
Three days should be enough time to enjoy the sights.
Enjoy :)

I live nearby, it is still cold and wet here. Dress accordingly. Latest temperatures range from about mid thirty's at night to about middle upper forties or so during the day. We are though, starting to get into the lower 50's as of a couple days ago. Prepare for wet weather, we get a lot of that year round. Washingtonians do not tan, they rust. Washingtonians complain when the sun comes out, the mold between our toes dries out causing a stinging sensation.

I'm from the Seattle area orginally. If I were you I would pack a sweater, a light jacket and some rain gear. forget the shorts this time of year. Long blue jeans and couple of t-shirts and long sleaved shirts....Enjoy your trip...

Bring your birkenstocks, Polarfleece, and GoreTex. A sweatshirt would be ok, and good walking shoes. Three days should be enough to see everything around downtown, and if you have a car definately.

You shouldn't need more than a hooded jacket. That way, if you get caught in the rain you don't have to fuss with a hat or umbrella.
