Ok, so I have a few questions about my clothes dryer. First, I'm curious if anyone can lend advice about the fact that the home I'm currently renting vents the dryer exhaust UNDER the foundation of the house and out the left side. There is about a 2' PVC pipe going vertically out of the side of the house, with a 90-degree angle pointing to the back of the house (it's not that far off the ground). The cover to it won't stay on and even when it is on, rain water still frequently fills the PVC pipe. I routinely have to use our ShopVac to suck the water out of the stupid pipe (from the outside). We have lived here for 2 years and have already been through 2 heating elements in our clothes dryer. This morning, I smelled burning coming from the dryer so I took the thing out (again, yay) and took it apart. Cleaned it out, and while I was inside, decided to use the ShopVac and see if I got any water. I did. A lot. What can I do to stop this rainwater problem? Why the burning smell?

The 2" pipe is not large enough to vent the dryer. You need 4".If water get in drill a 3/16 drain hole in the bottom of the pipe.

In Michigan where I live we have to have a four inch metal pipe with one elbow. This is what the insurance calls for also. Your pipe is being restricted and, the air is not coming out, it's over heating. Run the pipe straight out and get an outside "weather opening" over it. When the dryer is on, the vent will open automatically

We all have those "Murphy's law days"

Why don't you add a T or an elbow or two to the PVC so that the vent opening is facing the ground.
