Because real cowboys had to wear something that fits and stays in the stirrups on their saddles. Regular shoes would keep slipping.

Keeps the horse crap off there feet, and keeps there feet from getting caught in the stirup when they're riding horses.. and what not =0) (And there is a special edge on some that help keep there spurs on.. )

Because of all the horse sh-- No thats not the reason it has to do with being able to get your foot out of the stirups.
