Except for a smaller percentage of people who are so bone-ignorant that they discriminate against people just for being "different," MOST of the hateful people who oppose the according of EQUAL rights to gays (including the right to marry their partner of choice, regardless of gender), claim to be doing so on "religious" grounds.
Now -- when it comes to the RRR Cult ("Religious" Radical Right), they almost always cite the Bible as the reason for their voicing their opposition. And THAT is very interesting, for two reasons ---
(1) NOwhere does the Bible *ever* authorize or appoint any person or group to act as **enforcers** of its precepts against society in general. (Much less its MISperceived precepts). That makes the RRR cultists some of the most colossal BUSYBODIES that the world has ever seen. The **only** passages that advocate enforcement are those dealing with CHURCH discipline. Vis-a-vis fellow *Christians*. ONLY. The Bible authorizes NO Gestapo.

(2) The Bible’s strongest and most absolute directives are the Ten Commandments. One of which prohibits LYING. Ever met a person who has never lied? Neither have the RRR Cultists. Sooner or later, **everyone** lies, and ALL people *have* lied, during their lifetimes. Countless thousands of times. “White” lies are still just that: lies.
So next time you run across a homophobe, ask him THIS –
“Have you ever told a lie? Guess what – when you did that, you broke one of the Ten Commandments. One of God’s most IMPORTANT directives. But there is nothing in the Ten Commandments prohibiting homosexuality.
“SO – tell me why I wouldn’t be at least as justified trying to deny liberties to YOU, as you think you are for trying to deny them to ME? If you can’t answer that, then you need to GET OVER being a bigot.”

Actually, the matter can be resolved rather simply. Most of those who attack gays are fundamentalist protestansts. And one thing common with them is that the feel that all sin is equal, which is why they have no concept of either venial or mortal sins. They're jus sins.
That being said, did not god say "judge not lest ye be judged?" akin to the golden rule "do unto others as you would have others do unto you.
Very well then, if I am a sinner for being gay, are you innocent of any or all sins? I think not. And if you do not wish to be judged for your sins, I think you ought not to judge me for mine, if it really is a sin anyhow.
Besides, being true to your self means admitting the truth and not hiding it from anyone. Does this not honour that sacred commandent of yours?
That is my argument and that's all I think I need to say about that.

Devil's Advocette makes a valid point. What few remember is that the Torah - or the first five books of the Bible, also known as the Mosaic Law - was given to the HEBREWS (later, known as the Jews). Anyone who was not Hebrew (either by birth, marriage, or enforcement through slavery) was considered a GENTILE. Therefore, the laws set forth in Leviticus are FOR THE JEWS.
When Christ came he blurred the religious line. He walked among Jews, Gentiles, Romans, et al and did not discriminate in his message of love. Again, Love Thy Neighbor.
After Christ ascended, the Apostles were charged with spreading the Gospel - or Christ's Word - throughout the nations. St. Paul put his own spin on it because he was a former Roman and most likely engaged in the lifestyle of Rome until his conversion. As we all know, sexual attraction and tendencies really cannot be changed. Therefore, to usuage his own guilt for feeling attractions toward other males, Paul denounced homosexuals.
On a side note, many societies consider the eunuch to be a man who is impotent with women, i.e., gay. And yet there is nothing said against eunuchs. (Just more "food for thought.")

I do not wanna learn all that however my favourite is to lead them to discover that through them being homophobic comes from their possess worry in their possess sexuality. That's how it works. When you're judging anybody else, it says not anything approximately that man or woman and multitudes approximately the man or woman doing the judging. So if you are making a laugh of anybody for being homosexual, you are almost admitting to having sexual appeal closer to the reverse intercourse. It's additionally primary to discover that each person falls on a spectrum. Most individuals aren't one hundred% homosexual or one hundred% immediately. Most individuals are living in worry in their sexuality on the grounds that the judgments they'll obtain from the individuals round them. Society and the media perpetuate this plenty with films and television indicates wherein individuals get made a laugh of for being gay. When individuals discover that almost always each person is somewhat homosexual, it makes it much less of a giant deal.

There's another common discrepancy in the RRR argument that has been pointed out by the following website...
http://www.godhatesshrimp.com
Here's an excerpt from an article I wrote about this very subject last year...
I didn’t realize that God punished love. In fact Jesus Christ Himself says “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you” (Matthew 7:1) Ok, yes the Bible says that “[Homosexuality] is detestable” (Leviticus 18:22). BUT, earlier in the same book God dictates “Anything living in the water that does not have fins or scales is to be *detestable* to you” (Leviticus 11:12). So my question is: Why aren’t these people who like to call them selves Christians, persecuting anyone who enjoys an order of unagi (fresh-water eel) at the local sushi shack? The reason is simple. Homosexuals and their supporters aren’t like them, and they don’t agree with it, so they beat their Bibles and proclaim divine justice while they conveniently ignore the teachings of Christ. According to the gospels, there was once a woman who was accused of adultery and people wanted to stone her as per Moses’ teachings, but Jesus disagreed. The scripture indicates “When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, ‘If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her’” (John 8:7). So as a Christian, I live by Christ’s teaching, by knowing that I should love my neighbors and defend those who suffer.
EDIT: Excellent points behrmark, very good assessment

don't forget all the fun stuff in numbers and leviticus that tell you how many chickens to sacrifice to erase the sin from stealing, touching even the skin of a pig, blended fabrics, consuming shellfish, cutting the hair around your temples. then break out the quote by god (not some goofy apostle with no sense of humor) "before i made you in the womb, i knew you". and finish em off with the fact that jesus (who did in fact have a sense of humor) never once spoke against gays or lesbians and was friends with thieves and whores.

Unfortunately, homophobes usually will not listen to anything that anyone else has to say...which is the first clue that they are not really as sure of their cowardly theology as they say they are. There is a really great website that deals with this very topic...www.wouldjesusdiscriminate.com
Also, I think some people are just homophobes bc they're stupid ... aside from any other factors such as up bringing and faith!

Well, it's even more insidious than that, since not only are they lying, their stance is one of "bearing false witness" towards others, which is the core content of the particular commandment you were alluding to.
Of course, none of this logic will work. They'll just start quoting Leviticus to you and telling you it was Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve.

Good luck! Remember the story of the prostitute that was brought to Jesus? He said "let he who is without sin cast the first stone".
You may also reminded them that the apostles set the precedent of not enforcing "moral law" on gentile believers, so we should not enforce our morals in social law.

Then who the heck made Steve??? Doesn't take a lot of reasoning skills to work that one out does it. Very hypocritical
