what are the ITEMS you wouldnt buy from a THRIFT SHOP?

I'd buy underwear, if in perfect shape and after a wash in hot water and suds. I wouldn't wear anything that looked faded though. But, why even bother with a thrift shop for undies, if low on cash, when one can get a brand new pair from "Winner's", these days for $3, tops. Then again, many of the thrift shops in my city carry new stuff too; things that haven't been worn at all. I know I have personally given away many items of clothes that I just didn't like that were essentially brand new...

The only thing I wouldn't buy from a thrift shop is shoes. I am grossed out by smelly, dirty, or unkept feet and in used shoes, how can there not be other people's fungus or bacteria in them? IF they could be dry-cleaned, then perhaps I'd make an exception.

In general though, I LOVE thrift shops. I get tons of jewellery there and vintage t's. I love a bargain, rumaging through the racks, and love that there are so many different styles of clothes all in one place--vintage, out of date 80's, even 60's stuff, conservative, punk.

The question is whether it can stand hot water and bleach. Most personal items are a no-no, and many Thrift shops don't even accept them. (If you're afraid of sleeping on bedding that's been used by someone else, what do you do every time you check in to a hotel or motel?) Shoes bought there can also damage your feet, but then so can some new ones. There are people in this country who can't afford anything else, and to them these places are a God send. I still visit these stores, last month I got a hand made Raku tea bowl for $4, the highest price they would take for it, easily worth 10 to 100 times that for someone knowing what they were buying (Chanoyu is one of the luxuries I permit myself, although I will never be a master.). Most of the distaste people have is merely aesthetic, often some of the goods offered there are overstocks in unopened packages. I went through quite a few years when I was younger that I relied on these places, and am not too proud to say so. I also did my own tailoring and alterations by hand.
The Salvation Army DOES give things to those who need them, and doesn't rob them of their dignity in the process, even if they take a loss in the exchange ( such as paying people to sort and re-sort items), also what they get in contributions goes right back out.
I recall one thing Mother Teresa of Calcutta once said to a small group of us Franciscans, "A throw away society also has throw away people". Please think of that when you discard useful items and disparage those who must make do with virtually everything second hand. Sometimes it takes so very little to make a big difference. [Sorry, Preaching is one habit I'm not likely to break. But I live what I preach.]

Actually. some of the things you find on 'Thrift Shops' are yet UNUSED. They're just either out-fashioned, left-over sizes, or petty damaged stuff. You may find interesting shirts or pairs of jeans that are really worth buying from there. But I guess I wouldn't dare getting some USED underwear. If these are just first-hand factory over-runs then it's OK for me.

I wouldn't buy any undergarments such as bras or panties or any personal items such as toothbrushes etc. Shirts, tees, shorts and jeans are okay. they can be washed out pretty good and sterlized. I love second hand clothing stores but I do but new stuff too. I usually but clothes that I like that suits my personality. Sometimes it is boring, sometimes exciting, sometimes artistic, etc. I would never buy any under garments from there it is unsafe to do so.

Hey Enki, how's it going?

Anything used like underwear, socks and hair things, I won't buy. Not much for used night gowns either. Anything that is more personal, I pass on.

If in need, and it was well washed, yes. But I wouldn't buy plastic kitchen ware or used socks - and I wouldn't buy shoes unless totally desperate. Generally I'd rather go barefoot, or cobble footwear for myself. I'm from a family of "shoeies" and know something of podiatry!
