The two characters, Eleanor Rigby and Father McKenzie are connect to the church. Elanor Rigby is the janitor in the church where he preaches. {She picks up the rice after weddings} The dream she lives is she wants to marry the priest but priests aren't allowed to marry.
She awaits each night by her door for her lover wearing her make-up that helps her look beautiful. But he never shows up. She deserves to be pitied.
Mean while Father McKenzie is not much more successful being a preacher. No one listens to his sermons {no one was saved}
She died in the church where she worked as a janitor all her life, and since she never married she was buried with the name Rigby. Father McKenzie, wiping the dirt from his hands signifies that he is freeing himself any responsibility to her.
Every suggestion is a symbol and a clue. A very very sad song.
