Cell phones - I'm so sick of driving 10 miles below the speed limit because some jerk has to play with their phone, be it a phone call or sending a text. Also when I'm in the movies and someone's phone goes off....how freakin rude.

Computers.

I know, I know, but stay with me...

Computers lessen the personal workload, right? Then why did we need to add an entire branch of education, an entire separate industry, and an entire new department in every business, just to build and maintain them? The computer accomplished the exact opposite.

Of all the people who own computers (about 25% of the world-ish) how many use them for something other than a time killer?

If processing power doubles every few years, how come all we can do with it is make pretty pictures? (and that only recently). The freakin Apollo missions were all flown with less computing power than the SNES, but only the newest, top of the line boxes can play Bioshock. And things like protein folding require agencies to lease your PS3 down time!

How many productive, visceral, 'real' hobbies have you let slide to eff around on the box?

I work for a large electrical appliance manufacturer. The only thing we use computers for is communicating with other computers, and keeping records. Too bad we have horrid data-corruption problems, and the servers are constantly under repair. If the IT guy didn't review a new, flawed, non-functioning software to replace the last one we used for X task, replacing the version that he finally got to work, we would only need him for one day every other week.

I admit that I am guilty. Heck, how much more idle can you get than typing your opinions off into thin air?

Now, I'm not saying that I hate computers and we should all go back to pen and ditto pads, I'm just saying that, by and large, the computer is the modern convenience I could most do without. I know this because it is so often under repair or upgrade. For me, the computer is just another kind of TV.

Now TV... THERE is an evil modern invention...
Did you know that watching TV burns fewer calories than sleeping?

Okay, so it's a toss up. :-) I'm gonna go play ball now.

The car... a necessary evil... especially if you live in the Los Angeles area. Really can't get by without one unless you live in a area public transportation is so convenient, that it runs24/7. But come on we're talking Los Angeles, where most of our public office administrators are more focused on who's doing whom, instead of what real improvements can be done for our city that will be of value for the next 20 yrs. and I'm not talking about adding ONE carpool lane, But being able to take public transportation from L.A. county to the O.C. Cell phones would be my next choice.

DISHWASHER
They never do a good job and they are so much trouble to load and unload, that for my own family (which varies between 2 and 3 people - depending on whether my daughter is staying with me or not) operating one takes more time and trouble than just manually washing the dishes.
Therefore, whenever I am renting an apartment that includes a dishwasher, I just use it to store pots and pans or plastic garbage bags in.

Cell phones. It's like people forget where they are when they talk on them. I'm tired of hearing everyone's private business.
And if one more person ruins a movie by talking on their phone in the theatre...well...
