Yep, make it a taxable crop which grows well in Afghanistan. So the war on drugs would have one less crop to focus on, and the war on terror would be benifited by having heroin/poppy fields replaced with weed which would be taxed legally by the US. A win win (cough) for all.

I think so. Alcohol is legal, and marijuana's effects are not as severe or potentially harmful in my opinion. I also believe marijuana use and abuse could be better managed if it were legalized. Prohibition was an excellent example of how making a substance illegal can cause more problems. The only 2 problems I see to the legalization of marijuana are: 1) People might be more prone to abusing marijuana than alcohol since it has a less severe "hangover," and 2) Marijuana is not as easy to detect as alcohol when determining whether someone is Driving While Intoxicated. Since tobacco smoking is being restricted so heavily, perhaps the government should consider legalization of marijuana. It could be produced realatively cheaply, yet still have a high demand, so the government could see high tax revenues from the taxing of legalized marijuana.

As a care-worker I can see this from two sides health wise, Cannabis has it's uses ........ medically. I smoke a joint occassionally have since the 60's and I dont care who knows it! Nowadays It keeps me off 'Prescribed' painkillers that have me 'stoned' in a far worse way and stop me working. My boss was prescribed 'Sativex' which is a Cannabis spray. It helped him a little but 'grass' in the equivalent dosage makes a much bigger difference. Both keep him off dangerous doses of other drugs with far less side effects!
But also as a Care Worker I see the bad side of it's use by young people! Some really do become paranoid! They don't use the drug they abuse it! Just as they do alcohol! Most of the time they mix the two together! Is it really any wonder their brains get scrambled? When will people learn ALCOHOL is a DRUG?
Growing up with it and drink, I know from my friends that people will either outgrow the abusive use or they wont! by the time you get to 50+ you realise this world is crazy .............. one dangerous drug gets full legalisation, multi-million dollar advertising for using it with a tiny percentage of 'lesson ads' just to show the world 'we are cracking down' the other gets you a jail sentence for carrying the equivalent of a 6 pack of beer, 'lesson ads' by the dozen and the social stigma of being a 'junkie'.
Prohibition doesn't work > ask the American's.
Legal or not the 'abusers' will still get it.
My answer legalise and tax it! Just like they do everything else! At least it would take it out of the drug pushers hands! The tax revenue and the saving in legal costs could be put to use where it's needed.

Yes it should be. It is a harmless drug. Much less harmless than alcohol which is legal. They tried outlawing alcohol and we all know how well that worked. If they would legalize marijuana then our law enforcement resources could be directed towards more harmful things like meth. Or how about locating dead beat dads that don't pay child support. There are many places the funds could be used that are currently being used to harass pot smokers. And as far as it being addictive that is a line of crap. All things are not addictive. People have addictive personalities which may cause addiction to pot, alcohol, food, sex. Should we outlaw all of this. I say it is time for the government to step out of our personal lives and let us make decisions for ourselves. For money we pay politicians they should be concentrating on more important issues like homelessness, health care, education, the war. I have never heard of anyone overdosing on marijuana. I have never heard of someone going ballistic and shooting people because of marijuana. But our legal system does make alot of money harassing pot smokers who generally are fairly mellow people. If the government would stop and think about it instead of automatically throwing up their defenses, they could make alot of money on it by growing it in the US.

Federal marijuana laws were introduced and passed based on innuendo and outright false statements and all who opposed the efforts to criminalize it were deemed unfit leaders.
The fact of the matter is that the government had no method of collecting taxes on it like tobacco and alcohol.
Isn't it ime that our leaders took a hard look at the facts:
We are subsidizing farmers who could easily grow this cash crop;
Millions of people use marijuana despite laws against it;
Our legal system is bogged down and elimination of the cases against non-violent drug offenders could help ease the problem;
Think of the potential for tax revenues in this time of deficit;
Law makers today would never consider making their drug of choice (alcohol) illegal. Besides, don't they have much bigger isues to deal with than pot?

the question is WHY ARE CIGGARETTES LEGAL WHEN THEY SHOULD BE ILLEGAL! have you ever EVER heard ONE case of marijuana causing cancer? quite the contrary, some medical studies have found that marijuana-althought does not cure cancer- it can help alleviate many of the debilitating symptoms of cancer. ciggarettes cause heart disease, emphazema, lung cancer. etc. the reasson ciggs will never be illegal in this country is because the government collects taxes off of those ciggarettes. the reasson drugs are illegal is because the government has no way of collecting taxes on those drugs. and in order for them to collect taxes they would have to legalize them. I dont advocate drug use, but what I am saying is that I have never heard of anyone dying from smoking too much marijuana, having heart failure because of marijuana, developing lung cancer because of marijuana, having emphazema etc. You would think the government would outlaw a product that causes cancer and many other deadly diseases but they dont because they consider smoking a personal choice. on the other hand, marijuana can have many medicinal purposes and has NEVER caused cancer and they outlaw that. shouldn't smoking maryjane be a personal choice as well?

Yes. It's better for a person than alcohol, which is legal. It's insane to be ruining peoples lives with arrests and criminal records for something as minor as posession of pot. It's wasting billions of dollars of law enforcements money to enforce marijuana laws when that money could be going to fight real crime. If marijuana was legal and taxed it would be even more money that could go to law enforcement.

I really believe so, yes. While I do not smoke pot, I have in my college years and I can truly say that weed never affected me nearly as much as alcohol did. It basically has no harmful health effects that are worse than either alcohol or cigarettes. Therefore, I really don't understand why it is illegal.
Plus I really think that marijuana for medicinal use is something that should be researched further without bureaucratic red tape, especially for cancer patients who are undergoing chemotherapy, especially in a digestible form.

Yes, from all I've personally witnessed all 'normal' weed use does is make people silly and happy - there are a lot of sober people in the world doing millions of times more harm to our mutual well-being than all the people high on whatever.
Excessive (abusive) use of anything is another matter but that shouldn't have anything to do with the argument regarding legalization.

Yes it shold be legal because people are going to do it anyway and I believe that if it is legalized people won't try it as much. Since marijuana isn't legal people are trying it to to break the law.
