Always remember that i squared equals negative 1. So, square the -2 and get 4. Square the i and get -1. Multiply them and you get -4. To put this in a+bi form, use 0 for b:
-4 + 0i

that's it.

Hi,
There expression as written is equivalent to this:
(-2)(i)²
= (-2)(-1)
= 2
Converting to rectangular:
2 + 0i

If the expression were:
(-2i)²
Then the expression would be equivalent to this:
(-2)²(i)²
=(4)(-1)
=-4
or in rectangular:
-4 +0i
