depends how much petrol you put in if £10 or less then fill rest of tank up with diesel it will run rough but should be ok to drive to a garage. If it is a Ford you have dont even try and start it as chances are you will screw up the pump and cause a major problem that could cost about £1000 to sort. The petrol strips off the fine lubrication that the diesel provides for the pump and thats what causes the problem.

Remove what you can from the tank and refill completely full with diesel. A little gas won't make that much difference. If you haven't ran it, that should be all. If you have, the fuel system needs to be drained at the filter/s, injection pump and filters replaced. I assume it has an electric fuel pump, so with the air bleed screws open, filter removed or the connecting lines cracked open, turn the ignition on but do not try to start it. The pump will pressure the gas in the lines out, replacing it with diesel. Be sure to catch the fuel, you don't want to compromise your safety. Don't worry, it wouldn't be the first time someone's used the wrong fuel in their gas-diesel engine.

hi mate
sorry to hear you have done this but so have so many other people.

first hope its not too much and you havent started it, yes you will need to drain the entire tank and get as much out as you can from fuel system dont forget best to replace fuel filter.
this is because diesel is an oil and petrol isnt hence petrol does damage pumps and engines.
you dont say how old your vehicle is but in the past when i have had to sort this for people i do put a little clean oil in to the filter housing first for its start up to minimum any wear from the petrol and all is normal fine when it starts.
best of luck hope all works out ok
regards paul

As the others have said get it frained out, and dont run the vehicle any more than absolutely necessary, the petrol will ruin the seals on the fuel pump and filters if it gets in contact for too long, fill it up with diesel asap and you'll be fine. Its happened 3 times in one of my vehicle and no permenant damage has been caused providing you get it out of the system asap.

And next time try to keep your mind on what you are doing at the fuel station.......lol

good luck

ps the guy above is talking rubbish

What ever you do, DO NOT start that engine if you want it to work again. The fuel needs to be drained from the tank and the rest of the fuel system. Once this is done you can refill with diesel fuel.

Option 1 - Disconnect the fuel line from the tank and drain it out
Option 2 - Syphon the fuel out of the tank.

Then you can fill it with diesel and you should be good to go.

Take it to a garage and get the tank drained. Fill it up completely with the right fuel to dilute any amount of the small fuel left in the tank.
