It is free, and we are free to govern ourselves. We choose to live by laws, otherwise it would just be chaos. We cannot trust that people will do what they are supposed or not do what they are supposed to otherwise we would not have the amount of people in jail that we do today.

Free country does not mean things are FOR FREE.

It has NOTHING to do with trade or commerce, but how you live.

Free country means you have the right to live your life to the fullest without another man's leave or permission. If you are a lawful Citizen, your business is exclusively your OWN.

Yet the fact this is a common question shows how naive and spoiled some people truly are.

It is free, for example, in the sense that you could ask such a question without fear of repercussions.

Being a free country does not mean there are no laws, rules, regulations, or societal norms - a society without rules would be anarchy.

As long as I am free to worship as I choose and in the way that I choose, I can put up with the laws as long as they don't stop free speech and the preacher can preach the Word of God as the Bible states. When the atheists start ruling and they start stopping free speech so I can't worship God as I choose, then something is wrong in America.

Rules prevent chaos, so you really need them.
We are more free than 99% of the countries in the world.

nothing is "FREE".....
what we have is a small teeny voice....

2% of the people have all the money..
THEY make the rules to protect themselves...and we are governed by thise same rules.

To be in the top 2%, we have the slim chance to make that level of economic power.... but the odds decrease by the second.....

Research countries like China, Iraq, Iran, and most other democratic countries....
we have the best deal over all, but it is NOT "free".

You probably wouldn't want that much of a free country if a homeless guy with a gun moved into your bedroom. He's just being free.
Those are laws, they infringe on your freedoms cause if they didn't we would have chaos.

We are becoming less free.

The problem? Urban folk hold lots of sway to politicians and when urbanites gasp in dismay at something it gets legislated into a felony.

You would be surprised what a felony can be nowadays. Filling out a government form incorrectly, owning a firearms while under a protective order, despite being unaware of the issuance of the order at the time. Misdemeanors getting jacked up into higher crimes, Three Strikes; it's all just becoming a mess.

If you are an honest citizen, theoretically, you have nothing to worry about. But when you look around at the minefield of trumped up petty laws our legislators are continually enacting, you would probably shudder. (Just as a lifeguard does when he knows what's really swimming around beyond the beach).

uh, yeah but those laws are there so people have the freedom to drive without being murdered by a drunk driver, drunk drivers dont kill, they murder. and should spend life in prison. and if it wasnt a free country we wouldnt be able to talk about the things we do, we wouldnt be able to vote for bush than call hima traitor and be hung. you try sayin that in the middle east.

With freedom comes responsibility. Many don't understand that, hence laws, rules etc
