Is is almost forgotten in our current era why that RIGHT was written into the Constitution. Gun ownership goes beyond home and personal defense. It is actually a way of keeping our Gov. in check. To make sure we have a way of fighting our own Gov. should it ever declare dictatorship, or Martial Law. So if you patriotic by nature it is almost a duty to own a fire arm. This is all assuming you're a law abiding citizen.

You are a Patriot that believes in the
Edicts of the Contitutional Restraints on government, both State and Federal. Now, read the 2nd Amendment again for the first time and see if you can discern the targeted audenience it was written for. Do you see "The People" as that audience?
Wouldn't it be a bit asinine on Jefferson's part to utter that the "Tree of Liberty" must be watered from time to time with the blood of tyrants and Patriots, if Patriots were the only ones *not* armed in this republic? Here's Jefferson at his finest:
"God forbid we should ever be twenty years without such a rebellion. The people cannot be all, and always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to the importance of the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty.... And what country can preserve its liberties, if its rulers are not warned from time to time, that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to the facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure."
"When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty. "

Are you ever going to finish your question?
The US Constitution, actually the Bill of Rights, says that
"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."
Now, some may argue that we no longer have militias and this does not apply anymore. However, it does not say the right of the militia to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. It says the right of the People shall not be infringed.
That is a very particular point. The founding fathers fought Britian for independence. They did not want a government that did not respect the rights of its citizens. They wanted the citizens to have the possibility of overthrowing a government that infringes upon its rights.

i would take it a step further if i could and offer every citizen the opportunity to take a gun handling, shooting and safety course when they turn 16. If you are old enough to drive you are old enough to be taught the destructive power of firearms. any citizen who does not want to take the course does not have to, but i think the world would be a much safer place if people actually knew the power of a firearm. as a side note, i also strongly support the ability for citizens to walk around armed, either with a pistol in a side holster or w/a concealed carry permit. everyplace that has encouraged legal weapon ownership has seen a significant decrease in crime and in illegal weapon use.

Yes we do as Americans. It is one of the Central features to take back a hostile government ( If it becomes hostiles towards citizens) and give it back to the people it Governs! Felons and the mentally ill cannot and should not have a weapon of any sort.
From last night's Voice Vote in Senate approving the stripping of 1st Amendment Rights of Churches, Synagogues and Mosques and giving a Free Pass to Pedophiles to molest children without worrying about going to jail, I think every Parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle who is qualified is going to need one to protect their children. The Bill in Question that strips Free Speech is HR Bill 2015, and HR Bill 984, the ENDA Act disguised as a Civil Rights Bill... Weep for yourselves and children!

I believe every citizen should have this right, even ex-felons and folks who have gotten past any impairing mental illness.
Remember, the founding fathers made this Amendment #2, right after "Free Speech", so they must have thought this to be very important. You should not permanently lose any major freedom except for the most extreme violation.

What happened to the rest of your question? Did someone with common sense enter the room? It IS a Constitutional right for those who qualify under law.

I'll put it to you like this. I have guns...many guns and someone would be a fool to try to take them from me. Now to answer your question, no everyone doesn't have the right to own a gun. Criminals don't have that right and neither does mentally ill people

Yes. Some, by thier actions, are rightfully deprived of that right, and the right is broadly abridged for purposes of public safety, but the basic right is there.
