I found a very nice ring on this old lady in the street and was wondering how much it might be worth. I couldn't find one like it on ebay. It has what looks like diamonds and a ruby and is inscribed "Love Always, Thomas.' Does that lower the value?

You "found" a nice ring "on" some old lady in the street? Did the ring magically jump off of her hand and into your pocket? If you are legit then just take to your local jeweler. They can give you a ballpark figure to work with. It's their job. If they have to send something out of house to be repaired they have to assign a value to it, so there.

You simply have no alternative than to take it to a professional assessor. I would recommend an assessor for insurance purposes even though you don't want to insure; at least he'll give you an honest estimate of value,which an antique jewelry dealer will not do,because they will want to convince of it's limited value in order to buy it cheap. The engraving may lower it's value as jewelry but would not affect the value of the gems,which may have to be reset in order to obtain a fair price.

Other than searching on the web, take it to an appraiser, such as for estates; a jeweler, or a pawn shop.
Or, you could advertise it on e-bay or the newspapers and see what you can get. Sometimes the words make it more valuable...to a collector.

I can't say really, I imagine your best option would be to talk to a jewelry appraiser if it's something you really want to do
