Well, since you've heard from a White Sox fan (Gene), maybe you would like the Cubs fan's view as well. To generalize and say that Cubs fans hate the Sox is not true. I am a Cubs fan who is a white who happens to be married to one of my, as you put it, "blue-collar darker skinned counterparts". I know plenty of Cub fans who not only do not hate the White Sox, but actually like to see them do well. I happen to be one of those fans. I can also tell you from my experience, having been to games between the 2 teams both at Wrigley and Comiskey (or whatever it is they call it now, Cellular One ?) that the Cubs fans at Wrigley were much less abusive to my wife in her Sox gear then the Sox fans were to me at their park. Does that mean that I think all Sox fans are jerks? No. As for people who try to make this a white-collar vs. blue-collar, or a north side vs. south side thing. or a white vs. black thing, you are way off base. 30 years ago that was true, but I can also tell you that in the earlier days, the North Side had plenty of Sox fans, most of them Catholic. Why? Because the owners of the Sox were Catholic. Any stereotypes of the Cubs vs. the Sox fan tend to be way off. There are blue collar Cubs fans, and there are doctors and lawyers who are Sox fans. There are, believe it or not, black Cubs fans, and white White Sox fans.
I do agree with you, Mr. Asker, that the idea of hating one team in your city because you are a fan of the other is silly. As a Cubs fan, the Sox to me are just another American League team, no more of a worry to me then the Texas Rangers or the K.C Royals. The teams I save my hatred (too strong a word - let's say "strong dislike" instead) for are the teams that actually are or have been rivals to my Cubs, most particularly the Cardinals and the Mets.
My experience in Chicago has always been that the more intelligent fans of both teams realize that the teams are not truly rivals, and that there is plenty of room for both teams here.

Several reasons. Most big cities are not homogeneous, rather they are composed of diverse areas and neighborhoods. For example, Queens, Brooklyn and Long island residents are more likely to be Mets fans, while Bronx, Staten Island and Westchester residents lean towards the Yankees. Chicago of course has the North and South sides of town, each rooting for their team. Then there is the generational factor. If your family is from the city, you'll have your rooting interest passed down to you. In the old days, NL fans and AL fans were much more sharply divided than these days. For example, staying in NY, when the Dodgers and Giants left town, very few of their fans switched their allegiance to the Yankees. Those fans by and large became Mets fans a few years later. Finally, there is the issue of feeling that your team best represents your city, so you can't go and root for the other guys. In some ways, these rivalries can be as intense as inter-city rivalries. Imagine how it was in the old days, when Boston, Philadelphia and St. Louis also had two teams.

BTW, to jeremy_hancock, yes, Mets fans hate the Yankees because they're evil. But everyone should hate them for that.

The only two city teams on your list are New York and Chicago. Baltimore and Washington DC are miles apart and certainly not the same city. Last I heard LA and Anaheim were two separate places as well.

Point is that it's not hatred it's indifference. I'm a Yankee fan and could care less about the Mets. I actually like the Phillies and have followed them for years. I prefer the Dodgers over the Angels but don't hate them. As far as the O's and Nationals, who cares about either one.

I think you'll find that most people root for a team but really don't care about others. Of course this does not apply to Red Sox fans. They just have a blind hatred for the Yankees and their fans. It's called jealousy.

It varies from city to city. Washington fans hate Baltimore because the O's owner tried to sabotage MLB's attempt to relocate the Expos to DC. Mets fans hate the Yankees because they're evil. In Chicago, it's largely cultural and socio-economic differences between the north and south sides of the city.

I just varies from city to city. Chicago is the whole economics north south thing. And it's just fun to have a rivalry like that with two teams in one city.

This is a very simple answer, and i dont think anyone else is going to get a better take on this, it is because just say if u and ur sibling were competing for chore money at home, wouldnt it be a big contest? Its just because they fight for their territory like Mets and Yankees the fight for NYC, White Sox and Cubs the fight for Chicago and so on. So its just like a sibling rivalry

I can only account for Chicago. While Cubs' fans hate the Sox, the reverse is not true. White Sox fans are pulling for the Cubs as they always do when the Cubs are doing well. Cubs fans don't like their blue-collar, darker skinned counter parts, though. They carry 'Sox Suck' sign all the time. White Sox fans still hope for an all Chicago series one day.

Your hypothesis is incorrect. I have been around here since the Dodgers and Angels began in L.A. I have yet to meet a fan of one of the teams that HATES the other side. It is a strong rivalry but hardly hatred. After all it is only a game, not life and death.

to the idiot white sox fan, i know not one sox fan who roots or hopes the cubs win. The white sox fans hate the cubs more than they like thier team. THATS A FACT! Even after a world series crown in 2005 the white sox are still second to the cubs in the city and the nation. I personally could care less if the sox win or lose but i'll tell you what my whitesox buddies are quick to remind me when the cubs lose.

white sox suck and will suck for years cause that division is getting stronger while they are starting to sink.

South side sucks
