Back in 1979 I visited Naples, Venice and Rome. I would go back to Naples and Rome again, but not Venice.

Yes many times.

Basically, the further south you go the cheaper it gets.

Milan is great, but expensive, The area around the Cathedral Square is well worth a visit and has good local transport. Leave your credit card at home

Rome is over-rated. OK for a day trip but be prepared to be ripped off

If you plan a longer stay check out San Remo in the North west of Italy. You can get a cheap flight to Nice (Ryanair or Easyjet, maybe others as well), and it's just a few miles west along the coast road. Much cheaper than the French side of the border.

In rural areas, particularly in the area south of Rome, English is not widely understood. If your Italian is good enough it's a beautiful area and not expensive.

Have fun

hi
i went to italy in 1994. I went to Bolzano, Milan, Florence, Sienna, Lucca, Pisa..basicallly most of Tuscany.
My favorite town i stayed in however, was San Gimignano, a small town set on top of a little hill. I enjoyed the lake area where we stayed at Lago DeGarda as well. I was single and went with 3 other girls so we were on a budget. But i knew tiny bit of Italian so we got good food for a great price as welll as merchandise. I have added a link to San Gimignagno

Yes, I went there this summer. I went to Rome, Naples, Florence, Milan, Pisa, and Venice. I liked the majesticness of Rome so I would go back there, I loved Florence's ice cream :) so I would go back there, Milan is very cold because it is up near the border of Switzerland and I didn't get to see enough of it but its scenery was beautiful, and Venice had pretty buildings while its greenish canal water was creepy. I wouldn't go back to Naples because it was full of poverty and stank (it does however have the impressive ruins of Pompeii nearby), and Pisa was okay (I liked the tower) but I can't say if I would go back there or not.

Yes,I did ! It's very nice!!! VENICE of course is unique, romantic and absolutely amazing!!! Verona is also nice - you know, the Romeo and Giulietta story - there is the balcony of Giulietta...
Of course Rome is special, Florence beautiful, Milano glamorous, Torino nice, Pisa Tower interesting, Sicilia with the Etna volcano is ...hot, and Sardinia is ...silent and relaxing...
If you go there, don't miss to visit the VATICAN...
Nice trip...
Best regards...

Last Summer I went to Rome, Florence, Venice, and a few small towns along the way.. Florence was absolutely amazing!!! Rome was great, but very crowded, and Venice was crowded, dirty, and a little over rated in my opinion. the food is the best. you will never see pizza the same once you try real Italian pizza.
