In 2 days I go cold turkey. This is going to suck as I smoke about a pack a day and am a very obsessive person. What did you do to avoid temptation and get cigarettes off your mind?

As an x smoker for 27 yrs I tell you how I did it. I also went cold turkey. I stopped doing anything that was a trigger for me to pick up a cigarette. I stopped going to coffee breaks, I stopped having coffee at breakfast because I would linger with a cig. I stopped chatting on the phone cause the second I was on the phone I would grab a cig. I started knitting and crocheting again to keep my hands busy, I went for walks,I did gardening in the good weather,I wrote letters, and you would have the advantage of being able to sit on the computer for hours. Everything tasted better within about a week or so and I went back to drinking coffee after about a month and phones about a month and now I can be next to someone smoking and it makes me want to choke that person because the smell makes me sick,so stick with it,you'll feel so much better eventually, not to mention the coughing I don't do in the am. PS my dad smoked 3 pks a day for 45 yrs and stopped cold turkey one holiday and never again picked up a cig.

I looked at all the information available with respect to smoking cessation, and the one fact that kept coming back was; if you use anything to lessen the with drawl effect it willl delay the process. In some cases by months. by quiting cold turkey you get the physical part over quickly, so I think you are making the right move.

As far as the mental part goes, you are already losing because you are admitting that it is going to suck!

Good luck and when you wake up in the morning say; I wil not smoke today, say it about 100 times. I quit 5 months ago, and have been smoke free since. I smoked my first cigarette about 40 years ago!

Good Luck and LSMFT

I smoked a lil less than a pack a day for about 4.5 years.....when I quit smoking it was unplanned - I just ran out of cigs one night and forgot to stop at the gas station on my way home, so I didn't set a date or anything......after I went about 2 days of no smoking and started to nic I'd just go for a run or workout in order to stop the cravings, because when you are nasty and out of breath the last thing you want is a cigarette

It took about 1-2 months for the cravings to really go away, and then after that you might have an occasional craving if you are in a former 'cig situation' (if you know what I mean)....if you can tough it out for 4-8 weeks then you should be good

Visuals are always good for me - I picture myself all wrinkled with a hole in my throat. I'm 25, so I feel like I'm just getting out of the stage where I think it will never happen to me, and I'm accepting it as a real possibility. But it's really hard, I work a few nights a week in a local bar and everyone smokes. It's the stupidest habit I ever picked up. It also helps to exercise - I used to be an avid runner, so it's really frustrating when I try to run and I can't go more than a block without wheezing - good motivation to stop and get back into shape!

Good luck:-)

My doctor's patients have had great success with a new medication, Chantix. Keep taking it through the entire prescribed round, even if you think you have beat the habit. You can take up to three rounds. I wish this had been available when I quit 17 years ago!

You will need a prescription from a doctor for this med. If you want, check it out at www.chantix.com before you call your doctor about it. (I do not work in the medical or pharmaceutical fields, and have absolutley nothing to gain by suggesting that you try this. It's merely an alternative that may help and is available to you.)

you cannot go cold turkey, unless you're a master. do it gradually, it makes more sense and more effective.

Lot of good answers above me. I did all that and I used chewing gum. I now hate chewing gum.
