Rights.
I obtained my social security card / number, and Texas drivers license, about 1950, as a teen ager. ( Probably long before 60% of y/a members were born).
At the bottom of my s.s. card is the verbage : "NOT FOR IDENTIFICATION" . For the past several years, the s.s. number,(especially the last 4 numbers) are requested for identification, whenever someone wants to know about a credit card balance, to pay a utility bill, AND ESPECIALLY ANYTHING CONCERNING INCOME TAX, OR S.S.!!!
Now, I do not know when this condition of s.s. number became paramount in personal financial transactions, nor do I know when the s.s. number became MANDITORY for the s.s. branch's to answer any / and / or questions about my "benefits".
NOR DO I CARE WHO CONTROLED THE WHITE HOUSE, THE SENATE, OR THE HOUSE OF REPRESENATIVES !!!!!
For those who accuse GWB of enfringing upon ANY constitutional rights, I would like an answer to this question.
WHEN, & WHO INSTIGATED THIS SHI#, AND URSURPED OUR RIGHTS??

I am actually really surprised that taking part in having a S.S.# is VOLUNTARY.

Here's a couple links:

This one is from the social security website:

http://www.ssa.gov/pubs/10023.html

Then this one that tells about how this S.S. Act is unconstitutional and uses references:

http://home.hiwaay.net/~becraft/ssn.html

I just always assumed, like many others I suspect, that this is mandatory.

Thank you for the question. I have researched this now and will research even more about it!

From what I remember of the timeframe, it was under the first Bush. In the early 70's though, SS numbers became military ID numbers. In the Marine corps, somewhere in the 25+5 more numbers was the last of having a number other than SS number.

He has dictatorial powers now, but is not competent to make effective use of them. God help us if we get someone in power who can take real advantage of these new powers.

I am glad to hear the Supreme Court is rescinding some of the more extreme provisions of the misnamed "Patriot Act." We still have no answer on the secret abolition of the FISA Court or the suspension of Habeus Corpus.

Grow up dude! We need a national ID card because we have almost 40 million immigrants in our country, both legal and illegal, and some of them are terrorists, criminals, drug dealers, and spies. Many nations require an ID card and the people there have plenty of freedom.

Yes, the SS card is a national ID card. Who cares! Most Americans don't even vote or participate at all in politics, so we end up with morons like, W. Bush running the country.

I believe it was the neconservative element of the GOP whom drafted the Patriot Act just soon after 9/11/

But not too worry. The government doesn't have much of a leg to stand on. It's influence is waning (thank god!), and this bastard legislation will soon disappear.

"Several Claiming GWB...Patriot Act...has enfringed on our Contitution"...

Yeah guess who's "claiming" that now ?

FEDERAL JUDGES. And they're not "claiming" anything. They're striking down two key parts of the Patriot Act as inherantly UNconstitutional. All the other crap in this question is meaningless. It's been deemed unlawful, and will soon be in the scrap heap. Good bye, and Good riddance Patriot Act.

I think Gonzo was one of the main writers of this thing. Yet another of George's great picks, at least he's gone, but not forgotten.

I don't know about you, but I haven't lost any of my rights from the Patriot Act, and considering the dominaince of far-left propaganda these days, they haven't lost any rights either contrary to the accusations they make.
