It's just genetic. Now, if you have a species that has predominantly brown eyes, and then there's a mutation for one with blue eyes, maybe the males are really attracted to the blue eyes because it's different. The blue-eyed individual has an evolutionary advantage because their eyes are different, and the males think that's cool. Then they have more children and those breed as well, etc. etc. Mutations and evolution.

Your eye color depends on the amount of pigment in your iris (the colored part of your eye). Some areas of your eye couuld have more pigment than others...so that's why you may have some areas in your eye that are dark blue, and some are light blue or blue-gray. And the color of your eyes (or amount and distribution of melanin, the pigment, of your iris) depends on your genetics. However; I do not know what the purpose of eye color might be.

Just my own personal theory -

Lighter eye colors (blue, green) are more senitive to light. Most races with lighter color eyes originated in northern climates (eg Scandinavian countries). Most races with darker eye colors originated in warmer, sunnier climates (eg Mediterranean, Africa). Same with skin tone. I think it's just nature's way of adapting the indigenous people of a region to their climate.

people from northern europe had blue or green eyes because it snows a lot, and the blue and green reflect the brightness of the white snow. people from africa had brown eyes because they live near the equator and brown eyes reflect sunlight. blue or green eyes are more sun sensative, and i suppose you could say brown eyes are more "snow sensative." this was millions of years ago though, and now we do not have to adapt to the enviornment because we have things like sunglasses. hope this helps!

Darker eyes perhaps get less sun damage. Also, lightier skin is better for getting Vitamin-D, but I can't think of any reason why eyes got lighter.
