As a wholesale distributor, I'll tell you that alot of places like home depot and lowe's throw those dimensions away-even though they are in great shape. Next time your in one of those stores go back to where the millworks department is and ask those guys if they have anything you can keep free of cost. Aside from that, the truth is that both Lowe's and home depot have the ability to sell their lumber cheaper because their pockets are deeper. Smaller lumber yards have much better service, but their prices are higher. If it's price your after, go see the big orange box, or the blue one.

Check in your local area for a Re-Use shop. Some lumber is no longer allowed in the landfill. Re-Use shops sell small pieces really cheap. Check with a local contractor, or drop by where they are building a house it might be free! Or.. Yahoo Groups should have a freecycle site where you can ask for lumber just like you did here. Simply go to Yahoo Groups and type in your county name and freecycle. Freecycle is recycling and it's free!!! Can't get much cheaper than that!! Good luck!

Good quality and cheap don't go together. Good quality, go to a lumber yard. Cheap, go to home depot.

With all due respect QUALITY has NO degrees. Something is, or isn't; of quality.
Secondly: "Good" and Cheap don't strictly relate.
Third: "CHEAP" is relative.
To more answer the Q however; your'e talking about a piece of furniture; ONE piece of furniture. Even if it's an outdoor Adirondack Chair; the amount of wood needed will be far less expensive than the WORTH of the piece of furniture "HOPEFULLY".
I shop Lowes and HD constantly; but I don't strictly care for the QUALITY of most of their lumber; nor their prices.

Cheap wood = cheap chair. If you want something to look good, you will have to pay the price for good wood. The labor will be about the same, so why not do it right?

Remember the story of the Three Little Pigs? The wolf huffed and puffed and blowed their houses down. Well, one of the pigs used CHEAP wood!
