A spit is a coastal feature. Happens when longshore drift creates an extra stretch of sand into the water.

When a spit joins up with another piece of land, i think its called a Tombolo.

It's a narrow piece of land in a river or on the edge of a piece of water usually of sand and gravel which has been built up by the action of currents or tides.
