easy...
To return the oil from the world's 4th largest oil producing country (who is not governed by OPEC), back to the world market, which is required to spur economic growth in developing countries whose economic advancements rely on cheap oil, and advance the globilization of the world's most powerful corporations into these developing markets..
The war in Iraq will end up costing trillions of dollars...
This is pennies compared to the hundreds of trillions of dollars.. the corporations from the US, China, and Britain stand to make by globalizing new markets in developing nations.
FACT.
Democrasy, security, and peace are all secondary objectives...they always have been.

Resolution 1770 (10 Aug 2007)
Renews and expands the mandate of the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq. The original mandate, as laid out in 2003 (by resolutions 1483 and 1500), and so was suited to a country ruled entirely by the occupying army. This new resolution retargets the UNAMI mandate to one of helping the Government of Iraq. It also requires UNAMI to work on helping refugees, on economic reform, and various other tasks.
Resolution 1762 (29 June 2007)
Abolishes the UN programmes searching for chemical, biological and nuclear weapons in Iraq - namely UNMOVIC and the IAEA's operations in Iraq. Some $60m in Iraqi oil revenue from the Saddam era, currently held under the Oil for Food programme to fund WMD inspection work, will be transferred to the Development Fund for Iraq. The resolution was drafted by the US and UK, and supported by all Security Council members except Russia. Russia abstained, arguing that the supposed stocks of WMDs remain unaccounted for.
Iraq is a critical front in the war on terror, and victory there is critical to the future security of the United States and other free nations.
On the military side, we are hunting down the terrorists, and training Iraqi security forces so they can take over responsibility for defending their own country.
The United States and its allies are helping Iraqis on the political side to build a vital, peaceful, self-governing nation that can be an ally in the war on terror.

I have been trying to figure that one out for a long time. The stated goal is to secure Democracy in the region. I suspect the real reason is to secure the oil supply in the region. Either way it doesn't really matter what the ultimate goal is. In the end all that will be remembered is the ultimate result.

No white man has ever wanted to provide a "democracy' for people of color. So let's get that out of the way..
next..
the ultimate goal of the Bush administration was to do nothing to keep those who fled from Iraq in the first place....
next ...
those who are left have no where else to go so they remain, scared out of their wits, dying by the hundreds as weeks come and go...
next
most who have fled have money, friends or other associates in other countries... they have nothing to lose.
next...
the US had no intentions of 'training Iraqis to supply their own security. If so, why didn't they supply needed weaponry?
next...
it was slow and tedious, but the Iraqis are well aware that for some - their days are numbered.....
and so the United States, in their quest for overall control in at least one location in the Middle East, sets up PERMANENT bases there...
as we know Iraq has no system of law enforcement..
and so the US waits ---
to instill her own sense of law and justice...
after all....
ours is the best...or at least we think so...
and so....
we let them kill each other and we kill them and they kill us and its pathetic all around.
but
the end result will be a nation of fearful Iraqis...
under the control of the United States...
with the United States taking over law enforcement and whatever...
after all the Iraqis can't possibly do it by themselves....
BUT
the US as the controller is all a pipe dream...
Iraq will emerge under her own government.
The US will be forced to leave, one way or another...
And when that happens, it will be the best day in the history of Iraq.

The purpose was to install a democracy. The thing is, we cannot legislate what kind of govt the Iraqi people will ultimately choose for itself, or who will take power.
We need to mind our own business, figure out a way to lessen our dependence on the middle east, and get the heck out of there.

protect americas assets and destroy the islamic fascist thugs, seek and destroy. and i am all for it. these libs complain about the war when they sip on their champaign and have their live earth concerts, you think we would be living this good if we let terrorists into america? well vote democrat and you'l all witness terrosris alot more often, notice how we havnt had any terrorist attacks since the war started? coincidence? the troops brought the war to them, instead of making america the battle ground. then democrats pull out of iraq, terrorsits strike our schools and churches and you'll all find a way to blame bush and the republicans, every thing that ever goes wrong is the republicans fault, damn democrats cant admit their failures but they want republicans to admit failures even when they havnt failed.

1) Secure the right to the oil
2) Set up a permanant military presence so we can remove some [ or most, or all] of our military presence from Saudi Arabia which will
3) Help relieve the presure the al Sauds are under to be less friendly to the US which [hopefully] will reduce the Islamic Terrorist threat to The US.

To have the Iraqis control their own country without it breaking out into a civil war , that would probably suck in all of the countries of the Middle-East .
