The Church of the Latter Day Saints has a website that you can look it up on for free. familysearch.org. You can also use the National Archives at archives.gov/genealogy and the US GenWeb project usgenweb.org

Many people I know are doing geneolgy work on their families. Too many rip-off sites. If it says free, consider that it is fact-free also.
