Anglosaxon like most 4 letter words. They originally weren't impolite but came to be seen as such after the Norman invasion of England when the educated classes spoke French. You should find f**k in most larger dictionaries - Shorter Oxford, Chambers, Collins etc.

It's evolved from Old Saxon. "To Strike". Eventually, for whatever reason, that came to mean having sex.
